A paralegal or legal assistant, as defined, is «a person qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or hired by a lawyer, law firm, business, government agency or other body and who engages in substantial delegated legal activities specifically for which a lawyer is responsible.» [1] Historically, this was the first legal specialization. In civil law countries, this is often a lifelong career. In the common law legal system, on the other hand, judges are recruited from among practising lawyers.
