Its services to citizens include the issuance of an autopsy certificate with the approval of the competent authority, the search for missing persons, the handing over of corpses, forensic or psychological examination, the conduct of forensic examinations, genetic paternity tests (with the prior authorization of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare) and genetic paternity and/or maternity research in civil proceedings. The National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Medicine is a Colombian public institution affiliated with the Office of the Attorney-General of the Nation, which is responsible for the exercise of forensic activities in the country. The institute was honored in Brazil for its solidarity after the crash of LaMia Flight 2933, in which 71 people died, including journalists, managers, doctors and players of the Brazilian football team of Chapecoense.
